A man who is thought to have been homeless has been found dead outside a Tesco Express in Kingston, south west London.
Police and ambulance were called to the store on Richmond Road in the town centre to reports on an unresponsive male on Wednesday morning.
Despite efforts of police officers and paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, MyLondon reports.
It is understood that the man was homeless and regularly slept outside the Tesco Express.
A forensic tent and large cordon was put up outside the store on Wednesday morning, with a number of police vehicles and officers at the scene.
Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness, an award-winning charity supporting people out of homelessness in Kingston upon Thames and surrounding areas, confirmed the news.
The charity said: “In memory of one of our community who has sadly passed away on the streets this morning.”
A number of people who say they knew the man took to social media to pay tribute.
One said: “This is so sad. I used to buy him food when I worked in Kingston.”
Another said: “He was so sweet! He used to sit outside Sainsbury’s. I would buy him food every time. He always had a smile, even when he wasn’t feeling well. So sad, so angry I couldn’t do something for him.”
One said: “Saddest ever. I remember him, always said hello. I always gave a pound. RIP.”
The cordon outside Tesco Express is expected to remain in place for the most of Wednesday.
In a statement the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at approximately 9.20am on Wednesday, November 11 by London Ambulance Service to reports of an unresponsive male in Wood Street, Kingston.
“A man was pronounced dead at the scene. His death is not being treated as suspicious.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish circumstances; we await the outcome of a post-mortem.
“Officers will prepare a report for the coroner.”
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.22am today (November 11) to reports of a person unwell on Clarence Street, Kingston-upon-Thames.
“An ambulance crew and an incident response officer attended the scene. Sadly, a person was pronounced dead on arrival.”
